PDAs are the main use of communication with the Operations Team. PDAs are used to enter Daily Maintenance Requests (DMRs), for messaging that includes receiving and completing jobs, the start and finish of rest breaks, notification of delays for any reason, and the taking of photos in case of an accident or DMR.

New driver has been advised that all inquiries are to go through their supervisor, including potential delays or absenteeism.

A driver understands how to manage their fatigue through the PDA.

The Driver has been shown how to utilize the Accident Register Form in the event of an accident.

Pre-start Check and End of Shift Check

15 minutes is allocated at the commencement and at the end of shift. This time must be used for the pre-start and end of shift checks. The electronic checklist is stored in the PDA, and it will guide you through the items that need to be physically checked by you.

Some of the items covered as part of the pre-start procedure are; a visual check and top as required for the a) diesel fuel b) Ad blue c) coolant d) hydraulic oil levels e) greasing of truck & trailer canister etc.

You must check that the Accident Black book, Intercept book, Daily Run book is in the truck at all times.

Do not under any circumstances drive out of the depot with the yellow/green wheel nut indicators. This means that the wheel has been changed and it needs to be re-tensioned. Contact your supervisor for re-tensioning instructions which will require 2 personnel, one of which will be you.

Do not leave the yard without opening the tarp, and after each delivery point. This will ensure that the tarp is in working order prior to being loaded.

Driving Up Hills

When driving up hills such as at Kilmore (Hanson) - Driver is to use the relevant RPM to get the vehicle safely up the hill without over revving and causing damage to the motor!

The weigh bridges are not always on level ground. Therefore, if and when on a steep incline hold the manual gear until the truck comes off the weigh bridge. This allows efficient use of the trucks power and minimise wear and tear.

Truck to be placed in automatic gear and stay in automatic gear upon leaving the quarry.

Tipping

If the switches aren’t working in the cabin, please contact your supervisor to instruct how to swap switches.

Driver has been shown the correct dolly position and to tip trailer first. The exception is a drive over hopper.

Must exit the truck and do the visual check of the ground to ensure the front of the truck and back of the trailer are level with the ground. The exception is a drive over hopper.

Driver to stay in truck once tipping has started.

The driver needs to allow the truck to start moving forward slowly 2 -3 metres to ensure all materials have discharged from the body.

When tip is complete, bring down the trailer and then clean down the drawbar. DO NOT jump over the drawbar, mustwalk around.

Get out from the truck and check the tailgate lugs are clean of material, if not use the small broom provided to clean the area. DO NOT USE HANDS TO CLEAN.

If tip has been made into a drive over hopper - when tip is complete bring down the trailer and drive forward approximately 1.50 metres until clear off the grid then clean down the drawbar. DO NOT jump over the drawbar, mustwalk around.

No jack knifing unless given permission to do so.

At Springvale Pronto site, jack knifing must be done under supervision.

If unsure, it is a must to check with your supervisor.

If overloaded by kilos not tonnes, as this will require a full tip and reload, use the grain chute to unload the excess weight.

Do not unplug the tilt sensor unless contact Paul.

Exclusion zones when tipping are required.When tipping there should be a 25 metre exclusion zone, two vehicles may not be tipping at the same time in the same area. 15m to the side, 5m at the front and 5m at the back.

Coupling & Uncoupling Trailers

Driver has been shown how to undo the airlines, electrical lines, hydraulic lines, all of which must be kept off the ground.

Unhooking of the trailer. It is imperative that if the pin is tight and difficult to unhook the trailer then it is necessary to find level ground then apply the brake to check if the pin will easily lift. If not, go back into the truck and undo brake and possibly reverse back slightly to loosen the pin. Do not under any circumstances use an iron bar or any other tool to forcibly unhook the trailer. As this will cause damage to the part and also could potentially cause an injury.

The commencement of a rest break must be messaged via the PDA to the Operations Room - “start break”. This will be for either 15 or 30 minutes.

There is no need to message the end of a rest break, as the Operations Team can track from the start time to when the truck should be moving.

As part of the driver’s formal induction, they are given a copy of the Fatigue Management Policy and are advised that the maximum number of hours they can work on any one shift is 12, plus 1 hour in breaks in total. The driver is responsible for his / her own fatigue management, with the business policing this by way of reminder and warnings sent through PDAs.

It is a customer requirement by Viridian that all bodies and undercarriage of truck and trailer are washed out before loading the glass sand. The washing out is performed at Devon Road and signed off by a supervisor on duty, or a member of operations team.

For OI same wash out procedure (as above) applies, however this can be performed at the loading point at Sibelco and Lang Lang. There is no need to complete a wash out book as the Sibelco site oversees the process.

Driving and Braking Overview
